Computational Fluid Dynamic Study
The Monklands Replacement Project (MRP) represents a transformative and forward-looking initiative by NHS Lanarkshire. It aims to revitalize University Hospital Monklands and its surrounding areas by initiating a significant investment in the Lanarkshire hospital infrastructure. This involves relocating the hospital to a new facility at Wester Moffat, situated east of Airdrie.
A new, state-of-the-art University Hospital Monklands includes a dedicated energy centre including a large Air Source Heat Pump array providing renewable energy heating to the facility.
Element collaborated as a Computational Fluid Dynamics modelling partner with JG Consulting, a firm focused on developing strategies for energy production decarbonization. Feasibility studies on the proposed heat exchangers assured the client that the performance of the ASHP's (Air Source Heat Pumps) would remain unaffected by the nearby built environment and landscape.
The study outlined the implementation of a 18.6MW thermal output heating system using 50 individual heat pump units. These units were strategically placed in an energy center located near the new hospital. The system operates by extracting heat from large volumes of air, a process that can potentially create cold air plumes if not properly managed.
Additionally, the proposal includes a thorough review and consideration of various factors such as the configuration and appearance of the service yard heat pumps, as well as local wind conditions and their impact on ASHP performance. This comprehensive approach ensured a well-rounded and effective heating solution for the new hospital, taking into account both performance and environmental impact.
