The Boathouse
Award Winning Japanese Timber Frame
Designed by architects Ashworth Parkes The Boathouse is inspired by traditional Japanese timber framing joinery and has no mechanical fixings used in its construction.
The building's design incorporates a copper roof and draws inspiration from traditional Japanese woodworking techniques. The structure's design features a recurring pattern, which simplifies the variety of joints used. Standard sizes of timber are utilised, and significant pre-fabrication is done before the materials are brought to the construction site.
Element developed the stage 4/5 design for construction which was then fabricated by timber framing company Carpenter Oak and constructed on-site by Enerphase.
The project earned attention for it's architecture and DfMA design, being shortlisting and winning various awards, including RIBA Small Project of the Year 2023
AJ Small Projects 2023 - Sustainability Award Winner
RIBA East Small Project of the Year Award 2023 - Winner
